Sorrow Stitching

Connie has given me something to think about this morning.  My dear godmother stitched through her cancer diagnosis and treatment.  I stitched when my father fell mysteriously ill.  I stitched when my brother died.

Sometimes needlepoint is all that keeps us sane.

Sometimes needlepoint heals.

The Downton Abbey Tote Bag (and more)

KJ has turned an unwanted needlepoint piece into a clever tote bag, complete with a Downton Abby theme.
http://letsgoflyakiteuptothehighestheight.blogspot.com/2015/01/downton-abbey-tote.html

With the help of Google, I also found a needlepoint picture turned into a smashing pillow.

Not that handy with a needle yourself?  Natasha's will turn those old needlepoint belts into key fobs.

FrenchDecoChic makes very nice totes from older needlepoint pieces.

Shakespeare and Kaffe Fasset

Kaffe Fasset takes his inspiration for tapestry designs from many sources, but he's often worked with the theatre.  This morning I got an e-newsletter from Ehrman Tapestry (the source for Kay's needlepoint) announcing his partnership with The Royal Shakespeare Company.

He has created a needlepoint design called "Pressed Flowers" based on various flowers Shakespeare mentions in his plays.  Ehrman sells the kit.
http://www.ehrmantapestry.com/Products/Pressed-Flowers__PFLO.aspx#.VTOMraZH1jc

The Royal Shakespeare Company sells other goods based on the what they call his "Shakespeare's Flowers Range" on their website.
http://www.rsc.org.uk/shop/category/197df978-76c5-4c92-a486-a9a59f33dc5f/http://www.rsc.org.uk/shop/category/197df978-76c5-4c92-a486-a9a59f33dc5f/

This isn't the first time Mr. Fassett has worked with the RSC.  In 1999 he designed large floral cushions for their production of "As You Like It."  Ehrman sells smaller versions of these patterns on their website.  This is the only photograph I could find showing his designs (both sweaters and needlepoint cushions) online.
http://www.rsc.org.uk/images/content/Photo_Galleries-2009_earlier/as-you-like-it-2000-phoebe-silvius-361x541.jpg

Here are the small versions of cushions from the 1999 RSC "As You Like It."  First, Crimson Blush--
http://www.ehrmantapestry.com/Products/Crimson-Blush__CBLU.aspx#.VTONvqZH1jc

Double Yellow--
http://www.ehrmantapestry.com/Products/Double-Yellow__DY.aspx#.VTONiqZH1jc

Paradise Pink--
http://www.ehrmantapestry.com/Products/Paradise-Pink__PINK.aspx#.VTONcKZH1jc

and Rosa Rubicunda--
http://www.ehrmantapestry.com/Products/Rosa-Rubicunda__ROSA.aspx#.VTONsKZH1jc

Remember, English tapestry kits are much different than the hand painted needlepoint designs we are familiar with in the U.S.  They are printed patterns on larger count (usually 10-12 count) and meant to be stitched with the tapestry wool that comes with the kits in continental or half cross stitch.

Third Edition of Jo Ippolito Christensen's Needlepoint Book Out Today

Today's the day when the third edition of Jo I. Christensen's Needlepoint book is officially on sale.  Because this is the third edition, folks are curious if they need to pick up the 2015 version if they have the 1978 or 1999 edition.
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-needlepoint-book-jo-ippolito-christensen/1118892276?ean=9781476754086

Here's what the author says about the new version on Facebook:

"There is a tremendous amount of new information. In addition, I have completely reorganized almost all of the information, merging the old with the new. Part Two: Interpreting the Painted Canvas discusses all of the stitcher's decisions from the purchase of a canvas straight through to finishing it off with embellishments. I think that this order is more of what we stitchers actually encounter with each canvas. Dozens of people have spent countless hours and dollars contributing to this edition. The free app from the publisher is a very nice addition. The 2nd edition was 448 pages; the 3rd is 576. (Amazon has it wrong.) The 3rd edition has 1680 illustrations---225 new. I think there are 63 new stitches for a total somewhere around 450??? The number of color pages has doubled from 16 to 32. There are 132 or 133 color photos; the 2nd edition had 54 (I think). With a digital version you should be able to see more of the stitches and the texture. There is more of everything, just about. I hope you all like it!"

There are downloadable editions for the Kindle and Nook and there is an app available in both the Android and Apple stores.  You should know that the app version "features the “Stitches,” “Color,” and “Ideas” sections of THE NEEDLEPOINT BOOK in a digital format.  It will be available on the book’s on-sale date April 28 for Apple and Android products.  With purchase of the book, a code is included to download the app for free."

The app information came from the publisher when I asked about the app.  Hope all this helps you make up your mind!

Lauren Bacall's Needlepoint Pillows and Antiques

Thanks to Judy B's mention on Facebook, I learned that Lauren Bacall's things were auctioned off by Bonham's in London March 31st. You can glimpse a needlepoint pillow and rug here.
http://gothamist.com/2015/03/09/inside_lauren_bacalls_apartment_at.php#photo-7

I rummaged through the auction catalogue and found several antiques.
http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/22741/lot/191/

http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/22741/lot/576/

There are pillows, too.  They sold for $1500 USD as one lot.  I don't think these were things she stitched else I think that would be noted as provenance.  The rest of the auction is for art, furnishings, knickknacks, a few dresses and simple jewelry.  All classics, but not needlepoint.

How'd Amy Do That?

Before we knew Robin King as the teacher we all want to study under, she and Pat Ryan were the geniuses behind Amy Bunger's "How You Do That?" series of videos.  These videos are still available and still useful.  After all, they show the magic behind Amy's wonderful classes, kits and guides.  Robin has done us a favor by profiling the DVD collections so you can pick just the one you really really want.

Introducing Sitting Pretty, A Mystery Class (Michele Noiset) UPDATED

Ruth Schmuff's next mystery class will be Michele Noiset of CBK Designs' "Sitting Pretty" piece.  None of us, not even Ruth, know how the piece will turn out. That's part of the fun!  Plus we are left wondering if the cat is worshiping a mystical fish bowl or studying its next meal....
http://www.notyourgrandmothersneedlepoint.com/2015/04/whats-our-next-mystery.html

Stay tuned for updates as Ruth works her magic and "Sitting Pretty" comes to life.

UPDATE:  Ruth stitches the cat and his fabulous tail.

A Toast to Beads

Suzanne just finished a wonderful Raymond Crawford champagne flute, a sort of New Year's toast of a canvas.  It's a toast to beads, with three different beading techniques to create sparkle.
http://suzannehicks.blogspot.com/2015/04/heres-to-usa-champagne-toast.html

The background is done in brick stitch beading, which is just brick stitch with a bead added to each stitch before you take the needle to the back side.  The baubles on the table are Suzanne's piled on bead technique, which is just what she says--piles of beads.  The third beading technique is to do tent stitches on the glass, adding a bead to each stitch before taking the needle to the back side.  After she finished a row of beaded tent stitches, she threaded the needle through the row of beads to straighten them slightly.  (Beads are wiggly things.)

Bet in person this is fabulous but cameras are notoriously blind to beads and bling.  We'll use our imagination in this homage to beads instead.

Three Colors, Four Corners and Five Pattern Stripes

Anna Pearson is busy stitching a third color version of her "Tudor Rose" piece. She's also working a rhinoceros piece with elaborate corners and border stripes.

These designs can be ordered from Anna in England, so I put them under the Columbus trade show tab as new, but I thought folks would like to see how a design is changed by the colors chosen and how Anna is working a very elaborate patterned border.  Enjoy!

No Flying Monkeys! UPDATED MORE

"No Flying Monkeys" from Point of It All Designs

A couple of weeks back I "shared" Park Avenue Needlepoint's posting of this darling canvas from their Facebook page with Facebook's Needlepoint Nation group because I thought it quite funny.  Turns out this is a design from Point Of It All Designs, created by Hyla Hurley.  It is 9x7 inches on 13 count canvas and a real charmer.
http://thepointofitallshop.com/goodday-noflyingmonkeyss-386.aspx

I am going to blog stitch this, with the permission of Hyla.  You'll be able to watch me figure out the background, come up with something neat for the lettering, and stitch those fabulous shoes and martini glass.  As Blog's motto says, "Watch me embellish painted canvases, make creative choices, fail, rip out, succeed, and learn new swear words--all at no charge."

If you want to stitch along, Park Avenue Needlepoint is in Dayton, Ohio.  They had the canvas in stock when I saw it on their Facebook page.
http://www.parkavenueneedlepoint.com

The Needle Bug in Montgomery, Alabama also has this in stock.
https://www.theneedlebug.com

Waste Knot in Arlington, Virginia is having a Point of It All Designs trunk show.  I am not certain if they have this canvas, though.
http://www.wasteknotneedlepoint.com

And Designers Desk in Geneva, Illinois has this canvas also.  But your local shop can order it for you from Point of It All Designs.  Just hurry to order so you don't fall too far behind.
http://files.ctctcdn.com/68b0d50b001/e8176a0e-3f47-48c1-ada8-e88b28f6aa9e.pdf

Now, where are my stretcher bars and those durn flying monkeys?

By the way, I'm collecting the links for my blog stitching of this piece on the Chilly Hollow Stitch Guides blog.  As I publish each step, I'll put the links there so everything is in one place.  You'll find a tab at the top of the page once you click on the flying carpet photo on the right side of this page to travel to the CH Stitch Guides blog.

UPDATE:  Almost forgot!  I will be posting about this canvas each Friday until I finish it so you can stitch along if you please, or at least can check on my progress.

UPDATED AGAIN:  Park Avenue Needlepoint in Dayton, Ohio posted they have two copies of this canvas on their Facebook page.
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Park-Avenue-Needlepoint/215593498452477

UPDATE #3:  Pocket Full of Stitches just got one of the No Flying Monkeys canvases in.

Tony and Jinny Get to Work

From the Cover of Glorious Color, By Kaffe Fassett, 1988 Edition

Virginia posted a progress photo of her lovely Colors of Praise still life of Chinese ginger jars, worked according to Tony Minieri's instructions from an embellishment class she took with him.
http://stitchstyleblog.com/2015/04/ginger-jars/

It's looking really good!  I've always loved the still life pieces from Colors of Praise but there's no doubt they are complex to embellish because there are so many pieces.
http://www.colorsofpraiseart.com/miscellaneous.html

I've also always loved ginger jars and hope to have time in my crazy life to stitch one.  I'm not the only one who adores them, either.

This charming video showcases Tapisserie, a shop in England, started by the talented Hayat Palumbo, the author of one of my favorite needlepoint coffee table books, "A Passion for Needlepoint."

The book is full of wonderful designs, but there are no charts.  Just be warned.  This is an inspiration book, not directions on how to create some of the amazing things you'll see photographed.

Needle Minders for the Art or Book Lover

Thanks to Carol mentioning this on Facebook, I found a wonderful Etsy shop full of needle minders for the bibliophile or art lover.
https://www.etsy.com/shop/PinoyStitch?section_id=15615902&page=1

The shop is called PinoyStitch and the magnets are mostly miniature book covers, although there are some tiny frames with famous paintings inside.  You can also buy some hilarious Star Wars coffee magnets, Dr. Who themed-magnets, and even an empty tiny frame magnet to customize with a photo of that special someone.  The same shop also sells cross stitch charts and needle tins.

Choices and More Choices (Meredith Willett)

Meredith Willet (she of M's Canvashouse and Elizabeth Turner Collection, the lady wears many hats and all look good on her) has been teaching at Bedecked and Beaddazzled in the Baltimore suburbs again.  This time Meredith come up with multiple ideas for a canvas and everyone picked the option that suited them, then picked threads to make the choices their very own.  Much fun ensued!
http://www.notyourgrandmothersneedlepoint.com/2015/04/many-birds-many-trees-many-leaves-much.html

Meredith is very talented but when you throw in a huge thread selection and adventuresome students, things get really exciting.

Kreinik Color Selector

Kreinik has a new tool on their website--the Kreinik Color Selector.   You can enter the thread name or number and see what it looks like. You can also sort the metallic threads other ways such as color family or find the shading order when you need a light-to-dark set of colors.  It's a fun thing to play with and will be very useful, so I added it to the "Needlepoint Groups and Resources" section at the very very very bottom of Blog.

Target Sells Needlepoint UPDATED

Thanks to Patty who posted about it on Facebook, I know that Target now carries needlepoint kits.  They have a section called Hand Made Modern near the stationery stuff, apparently, at least in some stores, which is where you find the green and blue blocks kit.  They also have something called an embroidery box with has a lid with perforated holes which you stitch over using thick thread like knitting yarn.  The label shows an initial, so these are meant to be done as monograms.  Patty posted a photo of a chart of the alphabet that comes with the box.
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10205215949131719&set=pcb.841633489247144&type=1&theater

Dawn bought the needlepoint kit with the blocks pattern.  She says it is cheaply made and has blue and green skeins of what appears to be cotton floss, but she says if it gets folks interested in needlepoint, it is a good thing.

Jenny Henry has done a comprehensive list and review.
https://jennyhenrydesigns.wordpress.com/2015/04/14/needlepoint-at-target/

Thanks for the information, ladies!  Target, here we come!

UPDATE:  Donna took photos of things at her local Target.  Very 1960s look to the display, don't you think?

Shall We Play Spot the Needlepoint?

Janet Granger found a video of the Thorne Miniature Rooms which are displayed in the Art Institute of Chicago online, then wrote about it and explained its influence on her miniature needlepoint design business.
https://janetgranger.wordpress.com/2015/04/02/miniature-thorne-rooms/

She also thoughtfully included the link to the museum website where you can get a good look at all the rooms if the video wasn't enough.
http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/category/15

Most of the rooms have needlepoint rugs (probably on 48 to 60 count silk gauze or higher!) and many have a pillow or framed stitching and occasionally a stitched chair seat, and I think I even spotted a miniature needlepoint frame set up in a corner.  It's a wonderful way to spend a leisurely weekend browse.

Thank you, Janet!

Stuck for a Background?

Suzanne Hicks is a pretty durn talented stitcher. She proves this all over again when she couldn't come up with a background for a small design of two drink glasses.  She went with a pastel plaid and it is just perfect!

Sorry, I don't know the designer of the cocktail glasses but Suzanne can probably tell you if you ask nicely.

The ColorScope

I'd never heard of a ColorScope until Michaele of Come to the Point mentioned them in her shop newsletter.   They are a color selection tool.  Look through this kaleidescope-like tool at the pile of threads you picked for that amazing counted canvaswork design and see how they work together.  (There are three photos of the tool here.  Click on Next to see them all.)

Michele has several in stock if you need help picking colors.

BREAKING NEWS: Cathy Felten Died

Leigh S. just announced the death of Cathy Felten on Facebook. ANG members will know Cathy from her period as president of the organization and the other offices she held on the national level, but she also helped found several local ANG chapters and was known as a friendly and talented stitcher. Please keep her family and close friends in your thoughts as they deal with their loss and ours.

BREAKING NEWS: Birthe Cacciatore has Died

Debra Wallerstein just announced on Facebook that Birthe Cacciatore has died. One of the founders of In Stitches in Lake Worth, Florida, Birthe was mentor to many needlepointers and an inspiration to many more.  It is sad to lose such a talented and influential stitcher and teacher but she leaves behind many friends and great memories.

The Mystery at the Antiques Mall UPDATED

Susan at Plays with Needles stumbled across a mystery involving a piece of petitpoint she found at an antiques mall in Florida. Anyone recognize the heraldry or what 1526 means?
http://plays-with-needles.blogspot.com/2015/04/heralding-petit-point.html

UPDATE:  Susan talked to the College of Arms and here is what they said about the symbolism.
http://plays-with-needles.blogspot.com/2015/04/heraldry-follow-up.html

All I know about the date 1526 is Henry VIII was writing love letters to Anne Boleyn then....

The Chicago Tribune, November 11, 1968

I found this interesting article profiling The Needlery from the Chicago Tribune's online archive while looking for something else.  I hope you enjoy the quote from Russell Lynes which is as relevant today as it was over thirty years ago.  I imagine it was from one of his articles but there is no footnote to tell us where it was said originally.  I am quoting it in full below.
http://archives.chicagotribune.com/1968/11/11/page/48/article/article-7-no-title

"For many years needlepoint has unfortunately been considered a genteel pastime (like china painting and pyrography--leather and wood-burning--a century ago) only for the otherwise unoccupied ladies--a sort of parlor version of occupational therapy.  It deserves better than that.  It is a medium exacting in its precision but relatively easy to control.  It can be extremely simple or extremely subtle."

"Wool has a built-in luminous quality that can not be imitated in any other medium, and the colors in which it is dyed or which it can create [it can be mixed almost like paint] are limitless.  Increasingly in recent years there have been needlepointers who have taken designs from from contemporary paintings . . . with excellent results.

Scroll up a bit to see all the photos illustrating the article. For some reason the link takes you to the text, not the beginning of the article.

Remembering Russell Lynes (A Trip Down Memory Lane)

Thanks to Sally who found a blog mentioning the late Russell Lyes and his needlepoint, I have a great little article for you to read.  A writer and editor of Harper's for years, he was a stitcher, too.
http://mrsblandings.blogspot.com/2010/06/redux-redux.html

You can see a bit more of his stitching here with this cushion worked with his brother.
http://brbl-dl.library.yale.edu/vufind/Record/3992903

You can read about a pair of pillows his brother stitched that were sold at Sotheby's here.
http://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2012/photographs-n08885/lot.146.lotnum.html

If you own a copy of Celebrity Needlepoint, apparently his work is included.
http://www.amazon.com/Celebrity-Needlepoint-Joan-Scobey-McGrath/dp/B003TNK2VW

Mr Lynes wrote the introduction to Needlepoint for Everyone, a book I've never heard of before now.  It's by Mary Brooks Picken.  This 1971 newspaper article makes it sound pretty interesting, with chapters on needlepoint as therapy (with tips on stitching with one hand), men who stitch and their "special techniques," and a large section of ecclesiastical embroidery.
https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1979&dat=19710517&id=uIciAAAAIBAJ&sjid=hqoFAAAAIBAJ&pg=967,1957827&hl=en

I also found, courtesy of Google Books, an article from Life Magazine's May 28, 1971 issue that talks about male stitchers, including Mr. Lynes.  Scroll up a bit to see the header photo for the article before reading.  Needlepoint is the main focus but there's a bit about male knitters and dress makers, too.
https://books.google.com/books?id=OkEEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA81&lpg=PA81&dq=needlepoint+russell+lynes&source=bl&ots=367y2gwtcP&sig=ILLCuWS3ZUwUQl6zImrx1dWQWLo&hl=en&sa=X&ei=jb0SVfG5KoSSyASMoYKAAw&ved=0CEgQ6AEwCw#v=onepage&q=needlepoint%20russell%20lynes&f=false

As Mr. Lynes says about needlepoint, "It's always there when you want it and doesn't hinder conversation."

Many thanks to his memory for giving us some history to talk about as we stitch today.

Breaking News: The Kreinik Family Lost a Son UPDATED

I was shocked and saddened to learn that the Kreinik family, creator of some of my very favorite threads of all time, have had a devastating loss--Charles, the son of Doug and Myla Kreinik, has died.
http://kreinikthread.blogspot.com/2015/04/rip-charles-kreinik.html

Please join with me in sending condolences to the family and the company that bears their name.  I am sure everyone is shocked and very unhappy to have lost Charles.

UPDATE:  Here's a bit more about Charles' life and the funeral service for him.  Having lost a brother to suicide, I understand the pain and bewilderment and guilt the Kreinik family and Charles' friends must be feeling. I hope that eventually they will accept his decision to end the pain he found in living.  Hopefully he has found the peace that eluded him in life.

The Gift

Renee Frank of Pepita and Gone Stitching showed off a very special gift from a bride to her groom this morning.  I find especially touching that the canvas was a graduation present from the bride's grandmother.  What a wonderful statement of family and commitment this is!
http://needlepointofview.com/2015/03/29/the-brides-present-for-her-groom/

I had to look up the religious significance of the afikomen.  It's a lovely tradition that finishes the Passover meal with the help of the children present.  Here's hoping this bride and her groom have many children to help them use her stitching over the years to come!

Seeding Backgrounds (with Chicken Tracks)

An embroidery technique for backgrounds is "seeding" which is the scattering of small stitches across the background with each equal in size and spaced at an equal distance from each other.  Tracy Franklin learned this at the Royal School and is using the technique (which she explains well) on an original design.
http://tracyafranklin.blogspot.com/2015/01/crathorne-bug-seeding.html

I've seen a similar technique called chicken tracks in hand embroidery which also scatters small stitches on the background but in chicken tracks the stitches vary in length and overlap each other.  If you use 2-3 overdyed threads in green, for example, and just stitch hither and yon with them, you can create a very nice grassy background.

Interesting embroidery techniques like these are perfect for needlepoint.

Michael Frames for an Audience

Michael at Hanging Around Hoover just posted a video of framing a needlepoint cross on Facebook so folks could see the various steps involved.   He says this job took about 45 minutes since the cross didn't have to be blocked.  This was done several years ago before he had a computerized mat board cutter.
https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=811472428906164&set=vb.173093842744029&type=2&theater

Now you know why framing's so expensive.  It's very labor intensive!

Stumpwork Embroidery (A Book Review)

Mary Corbet is back with a new book review, this time of Kay and Michael Dennis' new book, Stumpwork Embroidery. Kay Dennis and her husband have been publishing books on stumpwork for quite a while now and this big book is a sort of compilation of all their others.  (So if you own other books by this talented pair, you probably can skip this one unless you are a Major Fan of their work.)
http://www.needlenthread.com/2015/03/stumpwork-embroidery-book-review.html

Here is their website.  You can buy their books here or just gaze at the wonderful stumpwork embroidery.  Don't miss the Amazon Adventure jungle piece!  If you happen to be in England, you can sign up for classes, too.
http://www.kaydennis.co.uk

If you are thinking of getting a stumpwork book and don't know which one, here is Mary's review of Jane Nichols' Stumpwork Embroidery.  You can see how her style is more formal than the Dennis couple's.  I own several of Jane Nichols' books and they are fabulous but I think Kay Dennis does better people. Jane is more interested in insects and flowers.
http://www.needlenthread.com/2009/03/book-review-stumpwork-embroidery-by.html

Jane's Butterflies and Moths book will blow your socks off! (second link)
http://www.needlenthread.com/2014/02/stumpwork-butterflies-moths-by-jane-nicholas-a-book-review.html

I guess Jane Nichols' work is more reminiscent of 17th Century stumpwork while Kay Dennis' designs are more modern in feel.  It's up to you which book you pick for stumpwork but anything by either author will be a great addition to your library.

Quick Notes

Just wanted to remind everyone that Gay Ann Rogers is continuing to post tips for improving needlework for stitchers of all abilities on her website. This is a run-up to her releasing her next big counted project, the portrait of Catherine the Great, in early May.  When that happens, the tips will disappear so read through them now.  The latest lesson is featured on this page, but you can read them all by clicking on the various buttons at the bottom left side of the page.
http://www.gayannrogers.com/lessons.html

If you aren't familiar with Gay Ann Rogers' counted canvaswork portraits, check out this video featuring her Queen Elizabeth I along with two smaller portraits of Mary, Queen of Scots and Bess of Hardwick.  She says Catherine will be much more opulent in keeping with her style and her age.

In other news, I am posting a lot of new stitch guide information on the CH Stitch Guides blog this month.  Guides are available everywhere these days!  Don't forget to check in periodically to keep up with stitch guide news or just find out how to contact the stitch guide writer you want to reach.  To go there, just click on the photo of the magic carpet in the right hand column of this page.  You'll magically be transported to that blog.  Click on the magic carpet there and you will fly back to Blog.

I'm also planning to blog stitch a piece once I finish my current project.  Stay tuned for that announcement shortly....

The Ultimate Thread Travel Case

Periodically I get junk mail from eBay that highlights popular items on the site. Some days I look to see what they are promoting and today's message mentioned these traveling makeup suitcases.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/311092653334

I looked at the photos and thought THREADS! Wouldn't this be the perfect way to pack several projects and all their threads and tools for a long trip in an RV or on a cruise?  For some folks it might also work well as stash storage.  Anyway, I thought I'd mention this for those who have summer travel plans that require lots of project storage.  I don't know if this is a good price or the quality of the suitcase but here it is for your viewing pleasure.

The Surgeon Stitched

Tara found this obituary of a surgeon in Chicago who took up needlepoint as a form of relaxation from his stressful job.  It's an interesting read as Dr. Irwin Williger lead a fascinating life apart from his needlepoint.  Surgeons often turn to needlework.  Dr. Donn is a much loved member of the ANG email list always able for consults on whether surgical tools are good for needlework, for example.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/obituaries/ct-irwin-williger-obituary-met-20150319-story.html

The Gordon Highlanders Great War Tapestry

Fans of modern needlework that celebrates the history of various regions who have a Facebook account will want to keep an eye on The Gordon Highlanders Great War Tapestry page.  The page is about the stitching of a new design by Andrew Crummy (designer of The Great Tapestry of Scotland) that features the Gordon Highlanders in World War I.  Mr. Crummy's designed three panels (shown above although I don't have the full image of the stag and crown) which will be stitched with 2 ply crewel wool on what appears to be linen.  It's going to be fun to watch the progress.

Town and Country Gives Permission to Wear Needlepoint

Thanks to Jane V. who mentioned this on Facebook, I have an online article from Town and Country counting all the neat needlepoint wearables available.

They don't mention you can stitch these yourself for less money and a higher quality, not to mention getting precisely what you want.  But once again we discover we needlepointers are trendy as all get out.

Here's a bit more about Tucker Blair's goods.

Limited (Labors of Love)

Each year Labors of Love combines a love of porcelain with a love of pattern and color to produce a limited edition canvas that comes with china attachments to create a dimensional doll of sorts that rises from a needlepoint background and wears needlepoint outfits.   Each year all ten-fifteen canvases sell out.   Nimble Needle talks a bit about Madame Pompadour, the subject of this year's edition, on their blog.  Click on each photograph to see it better.  This year's china pieces are the head and two arms, one holding an amazing fan.

Most of the series are historical royal figures, kings and queens, although a couple of years ago JP Sligh did an amazing geisha figure.  You can see them all here.  I think my favorite is Anne Boleyn.  Can't wait to see her stitched!

Mark at Labors of Love has collaborated with JP to stitch some of the Labors of Love Easter eggs that are available from their company.  Well done, Mark!  I love what you are doing with these little guys.

You can see their three Easter eggs and all the other Easter-themed designs on the company's website.

By the way, Laura Perin likes eggs, too.  She's into Faberge eggs, and does counted designs for those who like their canvas unpainted.

Makes me want to go eat a chocolate egg.  (But what doesn't?!)

Whiskers for the Easter Bunny

Linda's finished stitching her Japanese Bunny. Look at those whiskers! Who knew one ply of floss would be perfect?

I'm sorry, I don't know the designer but Linda stitches great rabbits.  Here's another.

The Professional Finisher at Work

The Nimble Needle up in Jersey just got a box of customer pillows back from their finisher. They are fabulous!  The finisher even dyed fibers to make the rooster's fluffy trim.  Who knew a finisher would go that far?!

Bedecked and Beaddazzled has a Kimberly Santa pillow back.  Look what their finisher did in the fabric edges!

Each piece is wonderful in a different way.  What a difference a good finisher makes!

The Professional Restorer at Work

Melissa talks about several needlepoint restoration projects on her website. The first is a family crest.

The second is a folk art pillow from the 1930s.

The third is a pillow chewed by a pet.

The fourth is a picture that had to be reblocked and reframed.

The process (and the projects!) is fascinating.  But after all this, you may wonder why folks bother. This is Melissa's answer.
